SATORP, a platform jointly owned by Aramco (62.5%) and TotalEnergies (37.5%), has achieved a significant breakthrough in the region by successfully converting used cooking oil into certified Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) through coprocessing.

In August of last year, SATORP successfully co-processed the used cooking oil in their Low-Pressure Hydrodesulphurization Unit (LPHDS), producing SAF that met all product quality parameters specified for SAF. TotalEnergies played a crucial role in bringing their experience and expertise to the table, contributing to the success of this endeavor.

SATORP has been awarded the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC+) for the production of SAF. This certification allows the platform to cater to the expected increase in demand for SAF in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The sustainable aviation fuels derived from used cooking oil can reduce CO2 emissions by at least 80% throughout their lifecycle, compared to their fossil fuel counterparts.

This achievement highlights TotalEnergies' commitment to developing a portfolio of circular products. SATORP had previously announced the conversion of oil derived from plastic waste into ISCC+ certified circular polymers.

Francois Good, Senior Vice President of Refining and Petrochemicals Africa Middle East and Asia at TotalEnergies, emphasized the significance of this project: "This project at SATORP is part of TotalEnergies' aim to produce 1.5 million tons per year of SAF by 2030. Sustainable aviation fuel is crucial for reducing the CO2 emissions of air transport, aligning with the company's climate ambition to achieve net zero by 2050, together with society."
