A Hong Kong-based multinational corporation recently fell victim to a cunning AI-powered scam, leading to the loss of HK$200 million ($25.5 million). During what seemed to be a routine video conference call with the company's chief financial officer, an unsuspecting employee was tricked into making 15 transactions to five separate local bank accounts.

Initially, everything appeared to be normal as the clerk joined the call. The voices and appearances of the participants matched those of their colleagues, creating an illusion of authenticity. Following instructions given during the call, the unwitting employee proceeded to transfer the substantial sum of money. It was only after speaking with the actual company head that the worker realized something was awry.

During a subsequent press conference aired by RTKH, Baron Chan Shun Ching, the acting senior superintendent in Hong Kong's police department's Cyber Security unit, shed more light on the incident. He opined that the fraudster likely employed advanced deepfake technology, downloading pre-existing videos and utilizing artificial intelligence techniques to manipulate the voices in the video conference.

Deepfakes pertain to the act of falsifying images, videos, or audio snippets by employing computer-generated content. This incident serves as a stark reminder of how easily AI can be misused for malicious purposes.

Oren Etzioni, an esteemed artificial intelligence expert, has expressed his expectation of a "tsunami of misinformation" in the coming year.

Recently, explicit deepfake images of Grammy winner Taylor Swift went viral on social media, causing significant distress. In response to this incident, bipartisan senators have introduced a bill aimed at criminalizing the spread of such "digital forgeries."
